Pipe Flow Expert 2008 for fluid flow and pressure drop calculations

Pipe Flow Expert’s standard features include an easy-to-use intuitive user interface, a robust calculation engine that uses the accurate Darcy-Weisbach method for calculating pipe friction losses (with the Colebrook-White equation for calculating friction factors), an integrated fluid database with common liquid and gas properties, a pipe database with common pipe materials and sizes, and a fittings database with common valves and tees.

Pipe Flow Expert 2008 version 3 also supports entry of data in mass flow rate, up to 9 different fluid zones within the pipe system, pressure regulating valves (PRVs), back pressure valves (BPVs), and includes a verification document which compares the results produced by Pipe Flow Expert against the known results for over 40 cases of published data.

“Flow and pressure loss calculations have never been so easy. Our Pipe Flow Expert software has an easy-to-use interface that lets users get up and running immediately. Pipe Flow Expert is simply an ideal software package for anyone who designs, builds, operates or maintains a pipe system. Version 3 provides unbelievable value and gives the user a simple way to analyze and visualize their pipe system, and enables them to easily calculate the fluid flows and pressures in each pipe.” said David Gardiner of PipeFlow.co.uk.

Users get the ability to view the calculated results in spreadsheet format and also on a visual pipe drawing with the pipes and nodes drawn according to a color gradient that is specified against a particular calculation, such as the volume of flow in a pipe, the pressure drop in a pipe, the friction loss in a pipe or other results data. The color coding and graphical representation of the system model provides for an instant visual analysis of the flows and pressures in the pipe system(Pipe Flow Expert visual analysis of flows and pressure drops).

“We get many positive comments on our Pipe Flow Expert interface and we place a high importance on keeping the software easy-to-use, even as we continue to add powerful new features. When you combine our best-in-class interface, value-for-money pricing, and powerful calculation engine, we become a compelling choice for most users.” Gardiner said.

The Pipe Flow Expert software includes support for simple network licensing, allowing multiple users to run the software from a shared hard disk drive, without needing to install any other licensing software. The program is also available on USB Flash Drive and can be moved between machines via simple “Plug & Play”.

Video demonstrations of Pipe Flow Expert

January 18th, 2008

Video demonstrations of Pipe Flow Expert, a software package for solving the flows, pressures and pumping requirements in pipe systems have been released by www.pipeflow.co.uk - you can view the videos by visiting the web site and clicking on ‘Pipe Flow Expert’->’Videos’

Video 1 gives an introduction to the features and functionality of Pipe Flow Expert, demonstrating the simple user interface while showing off the robust calculation engine thats allows a user to solve the pressure losses and fluid flow rates throughout a pipe system.

Pipe Flow Expert Video

Video 2 describes a classic Three Reservoir Problem, where flow occurs in separate pipes from two elevated reservoirs, until the two pipes join at a common point at a particular elevation and from this point the fluid moves down a third pipe to a base reservoir. The question asked is ‘What flow will occur under gravity in each pipe in the system and what is the total flow rate that will be delivered to the base reservoir?’.

While this sounds like a simple problem, it is not easy to solve by hand calculations since the flow and pressures in the system must be balanced at all points and as the flow increases in one pipe so does the friction loss in the pipe, which means that the flow joining this pipe is then changed because there is more resistance to push against. Accurately solving the flows and pressures in even simple pipe networks where flows join together is a difficult problem - unless you have the right software, such as Pipe Flow Expert, which then does make it an easy task.

Video 3 shows how to find the pump head required to move water at 200 US gpm between two tanks at different elevations. One tank is located at 0 ft elevation and the other tank is located at an elevation of 280 ft and the tanks are connected by a series of pipes that contain a number of bends and fittings. The system is easily modelled in Pipe Flow Expert and the required pump head is calculated instantly.

PipeFlow expect to add more videos over the coming weeks to show how Pipe Flow Expert can be used to model and solve a wide variety of general hydraulic problems that may be encountered by a process engineer.

The videos are also available on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/pipeflowsoftware

Pipe Flow Expert is used by people worldwide in many different industries, ranging from individual consultant engineers through to large multi-national companies.

Verification of Pipe Flow Expert Calculation Results

January 4th, 2008

Pipe Flow Expert Verification
PipeFlow.co.uk today released a 40 plus page case study that compares the flow and pressure loss calculation results produced by their Pipe Flow Expert software against the published results data for the modelled systems, which comes from a number of well respected sources. In all 40 plus cases the Pipe Flow Expert results compared very favorably.

The full verification document, including a brief description of each system modelled and a tabulated comparison of the Pipe Flow Expert results against published results, can be downloaded from the following web page:

Pipe Flow Expert Calculation Results Verification

It can be shown that the Pipe Flow Expert calculation results agree with the fundamental equations for flows and head losses in pipe networks by checking the results against the flow continuity equations and the conservation of energy equations that follow pressure losses around loops in a pipe system.

Potential users of Pipe Flow Expert are invited to review the results verification document to satisfy themselves that calculations produced by Pipe Flow Expert match the expected results.

Pipe Flow Expert can be downloaded for a free trial and any questions can be emailed to info@pipeflow.co.uk

Find Flow & Pressure in up to 25 pipes

November 29th, 2007

Designing a pipe system
We have produced a “Lite” version of Pipe Flow Expert that allows up to 25 pipes to be modelled in a single system. This program is exactly the same as the full version of Pipe Flow Expert except for the 25 pipe restriction. A pipe represents a logical connection between two points in a system, which may be just a few feet apart or they could be many miles apart. Multiple fittings and bends can be added to a pipe so that one logical pipe can be used to model a physical length of pipeline that has a number of twists and turns. The only time that a new pipe needs to be added into the model is if the pipe material or the the size of the pipe changes, which requires new data to be specified so that accurate calculations can be peformed.

Pipe Flow Expert Lite has proved to be very popular with engineers that need to find the flows and pressures in relatively small pipe networks. The software will model open and closed loop systems with components, pumps, fittings, valves, tanks, flow demands and other items. We have had great feedback on our easy-to-use interface and most engineers are able to get up and running immediately without having to read through pages and pages of user guide information.

You can Download Pipe Flow Expert Lite for a free trial and see if it meets your requirements. There are a number of example systems that you can view, open and solve to see the capabilities of the program. You can also draw and solve your own small systems to get a feel for how easy it is to use the Pipe Flow Expert software.

Why not try Pipe Flow Expert Lite today. It may be just the program you are looking for and at less than 50% of the cost of the full version, it provides an incredible value-for-money offer that is unbeatable.

Today, PipeFlow.co.uk released a new version of their popular Pipe Flow Expert software, which solves the flow and pressure losses in pipe networks. Pipe Flow Expert 2008 has a significant number of new features and enhanced functionality.

Updates in version 2.04 include:

  • Zoom to a selected area on the drawing.
  • Energy Loss calculations for each pipe, including energy used by friction, fittings, control valves, & pumps.
  • Improved Results Log Messages

New features in Pipe Flow Expert 2008 also include:

  • Network Licensing and easy installation to a shared drive.
The software can now be installed to any hard drive including local drives, network drives or USB memory sticks.
  • Cut, Copy and Paste of multiple items.
Multiple items can now be selected, updated, moved and copied. Items can also be copied between different drawings.
  • Pipes and Nodes can now be amended as a group.
Update attributes across a group of items with one operation to allow easy configuration of
pipe diameters and node elevations (and many other attributes).
  • Coloring of pipes in design mode is now supported.
Pipes can be drawn in different colors and line styles to aid in the visualisation of items within the system.
  • Color Gradient Coloring of Pipe and Node Results.
Results item such as flow rate or pressure loss can be selected and automatically mapped on to a color gradient which is then used to determine the color of the item on the results
screen. This feature makes it easy to visually see what is happening in your system, i.e. where the highest flows are, or where the highest pressure loss is.
  • Support for modeling Pumps with the inclusion of a Fixed Head pressure rise.
The pump head to be added can now be directly specified, which makes it easy to find out if a particular pump head is enough
to solve your system and meet all of the design requirements.
